Farm-to-Table Culture + Pastoral Charm
Located just 15 minutes southeast of Asheville, Fairview is characterized by its bucolic landscape of rolling hills and thriving farmland. While it feels worlds away, with its slow pace and inviting country charm, Fairview offers quick access to Asheville and neighboring towns—allowing residents to enjoy both quiet living and vibrant city life on any given day. While close to Asheville’s top attractions, Fairview is home to its own appealing mix of local eateries, breweries, working farms, and hiking trails.
Favorite spots for dining and drinks include The Local Joint, Angelo’s Family Restaurant, Daymoon Coffeebar, and Whistle Hop Brewing. The latter offers one of the most unique brewery settings in WNC, operating out of a 1969 Norfolk and Western Caboose and a 1941 Southern Railway Boxcar. This train-themed taproom not only offers great craft beer but also one of the most kid-friendly (and kid-at-heart-friendly) play areas in town, with a 6-hole mini golf course, a half-scale bowling lane, a disc golf Connect 4 game, a soccer area, and an open-air deck. Another family-friendly Fairview brewery is Turgua, with large open spaces along Cane Creek and live music events weekly.
Other noteworthy Fairview attractions include Hickory Nut Gap Farm, Flying Cloud Farm, and the scenic Trombatore + Bearwallow Mountain Trails. Renowned for supplying meats to many of Asheville’s top farm-to-table restaurants and a featured stop on the WNC Cheese Trail, Hickory Nut Gap Farm specializes in sustainable and regenerative farming. Their store offers an in-house butcher providing the freshest cuts of 100% Grassfed Beef and Pasture-Raised Pork + Chicken, and other farm-fresh products like local dairy, cheese, eggs, honey, and jams.
The farm also hosts seasonal events and spaces for kids to play and learn about its animal residents. Fall is especially popular, featuring a pumpkin patch, hayrides, pony rides, and fresh-pressed cider. Another beloved farm in the area is Flying Cloud, which specializes in growing veggies, berries, and flowers. Visit the farm for U-pick from mid-June through October, or check out their roadside stand on the farm or at local tailgate markets in North Asheville and West Asheville from April to December.
Part of the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge Trail System, the popular Trombatore and Bearwallow Mountain Trails are adjacent hikes that share the same parking area and lead to grassy balds with spectacular views. The Trombatore Trail is approximately 5 miles round-trip while Bearwallow Mountain Trail is a shorter, 2-mile round-trip hike. Featuring a historic fire tower and panoramic views, Bearwallow showcases wildflowers in the spring, grazing cows in the summer, vivid foliage in the fall, and snow-capped, long-range views in the winter. For a longer adventure, combine these two hikes for an epic 7-mile round-trip trek!
More seasoned hikers might also opt for the more strenuous Trombatore Trail, which connects to the equally challenging Strawberry Gap Trail, one of the newest additions to the Hickory Nut Gorge Trail System. Whether scaling mountains or searching for farm-fresh finds, living in Fairview is all about embracing and exploring the natural beauty around you and savoring the rich bounty it provides!
